History

Gravity R&D was founded in 2007 as a spin-off of a Budapest University of Technology and Economics project. Prior to establishing the company, the founders Bottyan Nemeth, Domonkos Tikk, Gabor Takacs, and Istvan Pilaszy had already won prestigious awards in the field of machine learning and data mining (e.g. KDD Cup 2005 and 2006). Their team, Gravity, was a long term leader in the Netflix Prize Competition that attracted world-wide attention. In 2009 they went on to lead "The Ensemble” team which achieved the best overall score (and was ranked 2nd) in the competition.

The company was named recommender start-up of the year in 2008, and won the Strands $100K Call. Based on its impressive international successes, the company strategically expanded by acquiring experienced management and funding. Gravity R&D collaborated with ValDeal Innovations, the first technology transfer accelerator in Hungary to create the company structure, business plan, and strategy.

This strategy quickly proved to be successful. Gravity was named a Red Herring European Top 100 company in 2009, and was nominated among the 25 most promising European start-up companies in 2009 by a panel of venture capitalists during the Eurecan European Venture Contest. 

Currently, Gravity - Rock Solid Recommendations employs nearly 50 people with offices in Budapest, San Jose, London and Philadelphia.
